A fireplace is a rustic gem. And whether gas or wood, they are an elegant comfort that every home deserves. Oh, and they help home resale value and do a killer job sprucing up a staged open-house. Whether wood, tile, cast iron, or brick, there are numerous ways you can freshen up your fireplace this season.
1. Love the Brick
One of those items in a home that’s highly coveted, exposed brick is warm, cozy and intimate. And brick can go a million ways: you can paint it, refresh the chinking, sandblast it, or scrape back old paint to reveal the original.
2. Go Faux
Faux brick has made leaps and bounds in recent years. If your fireplace is old concrete or worn wood, pick up some faux brick for a fresh look. From stone to interlocking brick, marble, granite, stucco and more, there’s no shortage of faux options for a new facade.
3. A New Mantel
A new mantel can make all the difference. Refinish the wood, apply a coat of paint (more below), or replace it altogether with reclaimed or found wood.
4. Decorations
Show off mementos that mean something to you and your family, hang paintings, or decorate the wall above the fireplace as well.
5. Paint
Try adding a coat of paint either on the mantel, or the whole fireplace. Strong primaries are fun, as are muted earth tones, greys, and purples.
6. Tile
Tile comes in myriad patterns and while more involved than painting, is a relatively easy way to revamp your fireplace completely with these new tiles.
7. Mosaic
The smaller intricacy of mosaic tile allows for an incredibly diverse array of patterns to be etched into your fireplace facade.
8. Interior + Exterior = Monochrome
Try painting the interior concrete of the fireplace to match the exterior. White on white is a fantastic way of adding modernity to a largely traditional item.
9. Interior + Exterior = Contrast
Try tiling, painting, or creating a mosaic on the inside of the fireplace that contrasts the exterior. Try herringbone tile inside with tiny mosaic tile on the outside. The sky’s the limit.
