Importance of Fireplace Insert Maintenance
Like any other heating appliance, your fireplace insert will need some care to keep it performing at optimum levels and looking good. The fuel type you have chosen will determine the level of maintenance required.
Basic Fireplace Inserts Maintenance Tips
A thorough cleaning and careful inspection of the insert and chimney should be done on every unit at the end of each season.
Gas Inserts
- Clean the fan twice a season, and the glass at the end of the season.
- Check the glass gasket at the end of the season.
- Inspect cap and clean out spider webs or other blockages.
- Inspect the burner assembly once a year.
- Replace the batteries in your thermostat or remote when needed.
Pellet Inserts
- Clean the heat exchange tubes with the built-in scraper every time you load your hopper.
- Clean the interior of the burn area every two weeks. Including the burn pot, fire back, ash pan, and the heat exchange tubes.
- Clean the glass as needed, and the fan twice a season.
- Clean the chimney cap and liner, usually once a season.
- Inspect the door gasket every year. You can expect to replace it every three to five years.
- Examine the glass gasket every year and replace it if needed.
Wood Inserts
- Clean the glass as needed.
- Clean the ash every two weeks. The wood insert will work better if you leave one or two inches of ash on the bricks at all times.
- Clean the fan a twice a season.
- Clean the fuzz and the dust off the blades to keep the fan running quietly and smoothly.
- Clean the chimney cap and liner at the beginning or end of each season to remove creosote.
- Inspect the door gasket once a year. You can expect to replace it every three to five years.
- Examine the glass gasket every year and replace it if needed.
- Check the air tubes and the bricks. Both only need to be replaced when worn out. They are designed for long life.
