Having your own washing machine is a wonderful luxury, but when things go pear-shaped, you realize just how much you rely on the convenience. Sometimes when laundry doesn’t go quite right, it could be an issue as simple as too much detergent, but there may be something more nefarious at work. Here’s what you need to know about how to determine what you can do yourself and when you need to call for repairs.
Washer Won’t Turn On
If your washer won’t turn on, there may be one of a couple of different issues at play. It could be as simple as a loose plug or a tripped breaker, but it could also indicate an electrical problem that needs to be addressed promptly. Also, make sure the lid is closed, as some units are designed not to operate when the lid is open.
Drainage
Is your washer draining properly? If you notice that water isn’t draining from the unit, there may be a blockage somewhere along the line. Check the drain hose and drain pump for clogs or call a technician to come out and do an inspection. It’s possible you could have also added too much detergent. When there is too much detergent, the suds can create a blockage.
Leaks
A leaky washer doesn’t always equate to an expensive repair bill. Too much detergent can be a problem, but there may be a leak in the drain hose or other connectors. You can do a visual inspection yourself, but regardless you should consider reaching out to a repair tech.
